  • Students whose permanent residence is outside the U.S. may be subject to both Federal and State income taxes. To determine this, the University of Kansas utilizes a tax analysis system, known as Glacier, to monitor your taxes. You will be contacted if you need to enter your personal information in Glacier. For more information about tax compliance for international students, visit the Bursar’s Office website at www.bursar.ku.edu. Click to hide
  • Scholarships and Grants for International Students Checklist is designed to assist you in understanding the steps associated with receiving a scholarship/grant from the University of Kansas. • Federal PLUS loans allow parents with good credit to borrow funds to pay educational expenses for their child's undergraduate education. Eligibility criteria include that each child must be a degree-seeking, dependent, undergraduate student enrolled in at least six credit hours. The maximum amount a parent may borrow is the student's Cost of Attendance, as determined by the University of Kansas, minus any other financial aid received by the student. The interest rate on a PLUS loan is fixed at 7.9%. For more information about PLUS loans, see the Plus Information Sheet, which includes a step-by-step guide for how to apply for a PLUS loan as well as frequently asked questions. To apply for a PLUS loan, the parent will need to complete a Plus Loan Request Form. The application process includes a credit check.

  • KU participates in the Federal Direct Loan Program and the Federal Family Education Loan Program (FFELP). Students are required to choose a lender to process their Federal Stafford Loans. It is important to note that the terms, conditions and the interest rate of the Federal Stafford Loans are determined by Federal Laws and Regulations. Those cannot and do not vary by lender. The ways in which a lender may vary is by the lender specific borrower benefits, origination fees and customer service.

We have established a Graduate/Professional/Law Student Loan List from which a student can select a lender for Federal Stafford loans. It is important to note the fee information and borrower benefits listed in the charts are subject to change.

The lenders on this chart have established electronic processes to transmit the loan applications and receive the loan funds with KU. Click here to learn more about how we chose our current set of lenders.

We have put together a list of questions you will want to consider when choosing your lender. You can use the websites listed to gather general information. We encourage students to call any potential lender with questions that they have:

    • What are the origination fees being charged?
    • What are the borrower benefits in repayment? How could you potentially lose this benefit?
    • Does my lender sell their loans? If so to whom?
    • What does my lender offer in terms of customer service? (Can I talk to a real person? What are the electronic services offered? Do I find the customer service rep knowledgeable?)

We encourage students to research which lender best suits their needs and to only borrow what you truly need.

Choosing a lender not on the comparison chart:

You are not required to choose a lender from the above list. If you choose a lender that is not on the above list, please submit a written request to the OSFA, including your full name, email address, 7-digit KUID, the 6-digit lender ID code, and the full name and address of the lender. If you have questions, please contact us at financialaid@ku.edu or by calling 785-864-4700.

  • If your financial aid, scholarships or other payments exceed the amount on your eBill, you will have a credit balance on your account. Excess financial aid refunds are typically available 6 business days after your financial aid file becomes complete. The first day to obtain excess financial aid for the Fall 2007 term is August 14, 2007. Questions about financial aid that has not applied to your university account should be directed to the Office of Student Financial Aid.

The fastest way to get your refund is to elect to have your excess funds directly deposited into your checking or savings account. To select this option, fill out the following form. Your name must match the name(s) on the destination account.

  • The Family Educational Rights & Privacy Act (FERPA) protects the confidential financial and non-directory information on a student account. The Office of Student Financial Aid requires that a student complete an authorization to release information form (1 page PDF) before releasing protected information to anyone other than the student. If authorized, parents/guardians may receive student information over the phone or in person. This authorization does not allow a parent/guardian to set up online IDs, accept/decline financial aid, or view the student's financial aid information in Enroll & Pay. Online IDs are provided to students only and should not be shared with others. This form is also available on our Forms and Information Sheets page, and paper copies are available from the Bursar's Office.
