  • Federal PLUS loans allow parents with good credit to borrow funds to pay educational expenses for their child's undergraduate education. Eligibility criteria include that each child must be a degree-seeking, dependent, undergraduate student enrolled in at least six credit hours. The maximum amount a parent may borrow is the student's Cost of Attendance, as determined by the University of Kansas, minus any other financial aid received by the student. The interest rate on a Direct PLUS loan is fixed at 7.9%. For more information about PLUS loans, see the Parent Loan Information Sheet, which includes a step-by-step guide for how to apply for a PLUS loan as well as frequently asked questions. You can apply for a PLUS loan by completing a PLUS Loan Request Form and submitting it to the OSFA.

  • The time and energy you spend conducting a successful scholarship search can be well worth the effort when you are awarded a scholarship to help fund your educational goals. You can download our Searching for Scholarships information sheet to guide you through a successful scholarship search as well as visit www.scholarships.ku.edu for a list of scholarships from agencies outside KU. The scholarships listed vary in their qualifications, requirements, and deadlines, so all students are encouraged to actively pursue the opportunities listed.

Unfortunately, not all scholarship advertisements are legitimate, so the Office of Student Financial Aid urges students and parents to be cautious about sending personal information to any organization(s) that sends you unsolicited direct mail marketing materials. Please feel free to contact the OSFA if you ever question the legitimacy of a scholarship, grant, loan, or other financial aid program. The searching for scholarships information sheet listed above also lists signs of scholarships scams to help protect yourself.

In addition to scholarships, all KU students are encouraged to apply for financial aid for free by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Although the March 1st priority date has passed and resources are limited, funding is still available for some aid programs, such as the Federal Pell Grant, Federal Subsidized/Unsubsidized student loan, and Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students (PLUS). For more information about financial aid programs available at KU, including eligibility criteria and application procedures, please visit www.financialaid.ku.edu/programs.
